Go Go Go Martin,
I can not wait to participate in this. Your first point “Stop Giving Away your Products for Free!” caught my eye. I am very interested in reading more on this post.
As you know I specialize in providing free ebook and software downloads, as well as providing free home business information, however per our last conversation on HomeOfficeVoice.com, I am thinking of eventually publishing my own ebook.
I hope to gain some experience and tips from this, so again I stress, I am very excited about this new venture of yours.
Good Luck as always,
Susan

Hey, Martin, this looks interesting. Just discovered it and swiped your feed. Looking forward to watching it grow. Best wishes.

Vision - Thanks for the enthusiasm, Susan, I really appreciate it.
I’m working on these and other posts - what I’m trying to get is a 3-way balance with this ePublishingDaily.com: 1) short, news-type posts; 2) short information/commentary-type posts and 3) longer, in-depth posts.
Come back often, comment, bookmark me or grab my rss feed - cause I’m going all out in this niche. :-)

Hey John … Thanks for that. Just between you and me, this coming Friday I’m closing my old blog down and I’m focusing all my energies on this niche.
Just doing all the research over xmas and talking to a lot of people I’ve come to my own conclusion: and that is that the eBook industry is set to thrive … and I’m placing myself firmly as “the man” on the web that will cover it and cover it well - now how’s that for pushing one’s ego :-)
I firmly believe in eBooks as a viable industry for entrepreneurs willing to put in the hard work in developing information products.
Heck, I even think it’s a natural path for bloggers wanting to monetize their sites who can’t do it via AdSense … but that’s another post so stay tuned ;-)

That’s interesting, Martin. I wasn’t aware you were closing down HOV. It seems so lively over there just now :-)
Actually though, you’re right about ebooks. As a publisher (in a previous incarnation) I’ve always been interested in their potential. At Writers Blog Alliance (.com) we’re getting togather two collections, one of blog posts in 2005, and another of short stories, both of which will be made into ebooks and print versions. I’ll be glad of any tips I can gather here.

John,
Yep, closing down HOV, even though it’s extremly lively lately - although the reason for this is because of negative posting - heck, I know I can get the comments rolling in by a little bit of linkbaiting - what I’ve learned by blogging nearly full time last year I could put in an (e)book :-)
Read my last post on Friday, but basically I say I’m stopping HOV because I lost the passion for it and really what a horrible niche (home business) I chose to get on top off…
And you didn’t know?? I gave a hint at comment # 35 :-)
Writers Blog Alliance - I’ll be heading there to take a looksee shortly.

I’m looking forward to reading what you have to say on these topics, Martin. :) Another topic you could write about is how to create quality ebooks (i.e., professionally designed and edited). I’ve downloaded so many ebooks, only to be disappointed by their shoddy content and design.

Hi Deborah,
Thanks for dropping in and commenting.
Creating quality eBooks (professionally designed and edited) - well … that Deborah, is exactly where I am coming from as well and was my initial inspiration in starting ePubDaily.
Just hard to write that thought in a tag line - wouldn’t want to put potential readers off, but what I hate about eBooks are their (mostly) shoddy content and design. Get those right and selling it to your target audience should be a breeze.
Expect to read quite a bit on these topics.

The other topic that interests me is the platform: PDF or the Windows format (can’t think of the name — not the XPS one, which is PDF by another name). I’ve always used PDF, but it’s a bit clunky compared to that other format when done well.
By Martin Neumann on Feb 16, 2006 | Reply
Thanks for that, John.
That’s now on my “to do list” - find out more about this windows format.
PDF has basically become the standard for eBooks - forget those old-fashioned eBook generators, they’re mostly crap. People are quite happy with PDF I think. What I’m looking at is how to better design an eBook on pdf - I think the vast majority of eBooks I’ve read are very poorly designed. Most eBooks tend to ignore the fact that most of it is read on the screen and many simply transfer the traditonal book design format onto the screen.
The design of eBooks is something very high on my agenda here at ePubDaily.
I’m also quite interested in a product, DesktopAuthor.com, that I’ve tried on occassions.

I think the Windows-only format is the one used by the ebook generators, Martin. But Windows Vista will have a new format, XPS, which is an XML way to do PDF, thus a competitor to Adobe. Lots of interest there, but it won’t be out till December. They’ve a long way to go to challenge PDF, but it’s a snag that there’ll now be two formats around, needing two readers etc …

Damn - Adobe and Microsoft should get together and come to some sort of standards. The eBook industry doesn’t need another standards war.
But then again, PDF has such a lead so the MS thing better be near perfect.
I like the XML route MS is going down though - it’s so much easier for different devices. XPS - I really have to look into this. Thanks for the heads-up, John.

Here’s a Microsoft link for XPS, Martin. XML Paper Specification

John … you are a legend. Thanks for that - I’ve got it saved for tomorrow, but I’m off to bed … it’s 2am downunder.
