Good eBook Design is all About Consistency

by Martin Neumann on June 4, 2006

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve settled down to read or review an eBook only to come away with the one thought: Geez, that was poorly designed.

With some planning and some thought the design of your eBook can give you that extra professional touch, that extra edge that your readers (and hopefully future buyers of all your eProducts) will love you for.

Good eBook design all comes down to one thing: consistency.

Issues such as colors, fonts, font sizes, grid layout appearing the same on every page throughout your eBook … yet seldomly do publishers stick to them.

A few tips:

  • Plan your header and footer and stick to it
  • Pick a font and font size and stick to it throughout
  • Start each new chapter on a new page
  • Leave lots of whitespace for easier reading

These are just some thoughts off the top of my head after recently reading an eBook on the topic of … how to write an information product. It had the goods but failed badly in design.

A strong core of what ePublishingDaily will be on about is the design of your information products. We’ll be releasing in July our free eBook Template Pack which will feature more than 20 eBook designs.

Free templates !? Martin, you’re my hero !

I was hoping you’d be covering the basics like this, as they’re sorely needed.

Now if you can cover all the pieces of software that I can use and teach me to use them, we’ll be golden.

    Like MS Word, hint, hint….

Mike … my goal is to cover it all :-)

MS Word, Ha? I think I have a folder full of tips and post ideas on using MS Word for writing eBooks - as well as other software.

Melonie - Nah, fine by me, be as forward as you want.

    Superpowers … in my dreams.

Free eBook Templates … I let that announcement seep in and it seems to be a winner.

Makes me want to work that extra harder to make them the best I can.
